Narrative Biography: Alex Rivera
Background & Education
Alex Rivera grew up in the suburbs of Syracuse and spent much of their teenage years as the “family tech support,” fixing routers and cleaning viruses off grandparents’ laptops. After graduating from West Genesee High School, Alex wasn’t sure about a four-year degree but knew they liked working with systems. They enrolled at Onondaga Community College (OCC) and recently completed an Associate of Applied Science in Computer Information Systems. During their final semester, Alex stayed up late for three weeks straight to study for the CompTIA A+ certification, which they passed just last month.
Work Experience: The “Hardware” Phase
While attending OCC, Alex worked part-time at a local electronics repair shop in Destiny USA called “QuickFix Tech.” For eighteen months, Alex sat at the back bench, replacing cracked iPhone screens, swapping out dead power supplies in Dell desktops, and helping frustrated customers understand why their tablets wouldn’t sync. Alex was known for being the only technician who didn’t lose their cool when a customer was angry. The shop owner eventually put Alex in charge of the “Inventory Spreadsheet,” where Alex had to track every screen, battery, and cable that came through the door using Excel.
The “Service” Phase
Before the repair shop, Alex spent two years working the front desk at a busy Planet Fitness. While it wasn’t a “tech” job, it was a crash course in multitasking. Alex had to check members in, handle billing disputes, and ensure the gym’s Wi-Fi stayed up for the rows of treadmills. They learned how to handle sensitive information—like credit card details and member addresses—with total discretion, a habit that stuck.
Technical Interests & Personality
In their spare time, Alex built a custom gaming PC from scratch and currently manages a small Discord server for a local hobbyist group. They are comfortable jumping between a Windows PC and a MacBook, though they admit they prefer the customizability of Windows. Alex is the type of person who actually reads the manual before plugging something in.
Alex is now looking for a “real” career move. They want to stay in the Syracuse area to be near family and are particularly interested in healthcare because they like the idea of their technical skills helping people get better. They have heard that medical offices are strict about privacy, which Alex respects, but they are a little nervous about learning a “Medical Record System” since they’ve never used one before—though they are a very fast learner when it comes to new software.
